Caritas Hong Kong has a long history of operating lodges, hostels, and catering services, with roots dating back to the 1950s.

At that time, during the postwar social transition, the Roman Catholic Church responded to urgent social needs by founding Caritas to carry out various poverty alleviation and relief efforts. Over the years, these services have continuously evolved across different contexts, perfectly combining the triple missions of social welfare, community support, and vocational training.

  • Early Development: Facing the hardships experienced by grassroots communities after the war, catering services began with the most direct 'food rescue' and livelihood relief, providing food and clothing for those in need.
  • Modern Transformation: With social progress, services have gradually expanded to include opening canteens, fast-food outlets, restaurants, and catering services.

Catering Services: From Food Rescue to Diverse Catering

  • Early Development (1950s): Facing postwar grassroots hardships, catering services began with direct 'food rescue' and livelihood relief, providing food and drink to those in need.
  • Modern Transformation: With social progress, services gradually expanded to open canteens, fast-food outlets, restaurants, and catering services. In addition to serving Caritas internal staff, the service also broadly benefited grassroots workers, students, and citizens from all walks of life, offering affordable breakfast, lunch, and banquet services.

Hostel Services: A Place to Shelter and Assist Each Other

  • Early History (Early 1960s): When hostel services were first established, they mainly provided shelter for Saigon fishermen who were homeless and struggling to meet urgent needs.
  • Service Expansion: As times changed, the target audience gradually expanded to include young workers and students in society, providing them with safe and affordable long-term or short-term accommodation in the rapidly developing city.
